Digital wedding invitations (IV) in Nigeria: a practical guide

E-IVs on WhatsApp are quick & easy to update, but just as easy to forward. Here is how to send them well, when to print, & how RSVPs & passes keep numbers in check.

Digital wedding invitations, or e-IVs, are a popular way to invite guests to Nigerian & African weddings, usually shared on WhatsApp. They are fast & easy to update, but just as easy to forward, so the best approach pairs a digital IV with an RSVP &, for larger weddings, personal entry passes. Many couples still print a smaller number of IVs for parents, elders & special guests.

This guide covers the formats, the etiquette & the practical steps that stop a single forwarded image from filling your reception.

What counts as a digital wedding invitation?

A digital IV can be a designed image or short video sent on WhatsApp, a PDF, or a link to a wedding website. The image is the most familiar, but a link can do more: it holds every event, venue & timing in one place, & you can update it without resending anything.

  • Image or flyer IV: quick to share & easy to read, but fixed. If the venue changes, you send a new one.
  • Video IV: personal & memorable, but heavier to download on slow data.
  • Wedding website link: one link with the invitation, schedule, dress code, RSVP & more. Changes appear straight away.

Many couples combine them: a beautiful image for the first message, with the website link underneath for the details.

Digital vs printed IVs: which should you choose?

Most couples do not have to choose one or the other. A mix usually works best, & it lets you match the invitation to the guest.

When digital works best

  • Large guest lists spread across cities & countries
  • Guests who live abroad
  • Weddings where timings or venues may still change
  • Couples who want every RSVP collected in one place

When printed still matters

  • Parents, elders & respected family friends who may expect a physical card
  • Traditional ceremonies where families deliver invitations in person
  • Guests who will treasure a printed card as a keepsake

A middle path is a printed card that carries a QR code to your website, so elders have something to hold & the details online can still be updated.

Customs differ by family, so ask both sets of parents how they would like their own guests invited. If you plan a printed run, our wedding invitations service designs printed & digital invitations in the same look, & nothing is printed until you approve it.

Etiquette for sending digital invitations on WhatsApp

A WhatsApp invitation can feel personal or careless depending on how you send it. A few habits make the difference.

  1. Send it individually rather than to large groups, unless the group is the guest list.
  2. Add a short personal line, such as "We would love you to celebrate with us."
  3. Be clear about who is invited. If only the guest is invited, say so kindly.
  4. Call elders first, or ask a parent to pass the invitation on personally.
  5. Give a clear RSVP date & a simple way to reply.
  6. Avoid late-night sends & mass broadcasts.

Remember that families often invite guests on behalf of the couple. Agree early who sends what, so no one receives three different versions of the same invitation.

Timing

Send save-the-dates early to guests who need to travel, then the full digital invitation a few months before the wedding. Follow up once, politely, as the RSVP deadline approaches, rather than sending repeated reminders.

How to stop forwarded invitations

The biggest worry with e-IVs is that they travel. One guest forwards to a friend, who forwards to a group, & a reception planned for 300 suddenly has far more people at the gate.

You cannot stop an image being forwarded, but you can make a forwarded copy useless on the day:

  • Say clearly on the IV "Strictly by invitation" &, where it applies, "Admits one" or "Admits two".
  • Ask every guest to RSVP, & confirm only the names you approve.
  • Issue a personal entry pass to each approved guest, instead of relying on a general flyer that anyone can show at the door.
  • Brief your security or ushers on what to check, & give them a list or a check-in tool.

It also helps to tell guests why. A line on your website explaining that numbers are limited by the venue & the caterer turns a rule into a reasonable request.

On our Wedding Website, guests RSVP once &, when you approve them, receive a personal entry code by SMS & WhatsApp. At the gate, your security team uses a door check-in portal to check each code & face, so forwarded invitations stop there. Our post on guest management for a big Nigerian wedding goes into more detail.

Pairing your digital IV with RSVP & entry passes

The neatest system is a single flow: invite, reply, approve, pass.

  1. Send the IV with your website link & RSVP deadline.
  2. Guests reply with their name & the events they will attend.
  3. You, or a trusted family member, approve each reply.
  4. Approved guests receive their pass.
  5. On the day, the door team checks each pass.

This gives you real numbers for the caterer & the venue, & it gives guests confidence that they are expected. It also makes the day easier for the families: instead of debating at the gate who was invited, the door team simply checks the pass. Elders invited by phone or in person can be added to the list by a family member, so they are expected too.

For how the codes work, see our guide to personal entry passes & QR codes.

What to include on a digital IV

Keep the image itself uncluttered & let the link carry the detail.

  • The couple's names &, where customary, the families' names
  • The event, the date & the city
  • The colours or dress code, if it fits in one line
  • "Strictly by invitation" or an admit line, where needed
  • The RSVP deadline & the website link or QR code

Design matters too. A clear IV in your wedding colours looks more intentional than a crowded one, & it is easier to read on a small screen. Check that the text is large enough to read without zooming in.

For exact phrasing, our wedding invitation wording examples cover family-hosted, couple-hosted & traditional invitations, with RSVP & aso-ebi lines you can copy.

Questions people ask

Is it acceptable to send wedding invitations on WhatsApp in Nigeria?

For many weddings, yes, especially for friends, colleagues & guests abroad. It is polite to send invitations individually with a personal note, & to invite elders & close family the way they expect, which may mean a call, a visit or a printed card. If you are unsure, ask your parents.

How do I stop people forwarding my e-IV?

You cannot stop an image being forwarded, but you can make a forwarded copy useless at the gate. Ask guests to RSVP, approve the names you expect, & give each approved guest a personal entry pass that the door team checks. Mark the IV clearly as strictly by invitation.

Should we still print some wedding invitations?

Many couples print a smaller run for parents, elders & special guests, & send digital invitations to everyone else. Printed cards also make lovely keepsakes. Agree numbers with both families before you order, so the print run covers the guests they plan to invite in person.
