A bridesmaid proposal is a small, thoughtful way to ask your friends to join your bridal train, usually with a gift box, a handwritten card or a simple outing. The best bridesmaid proposal ideas are personal & honest about what you are asking, including the costs & time involved. Here are ideas for boxes, wording you can adapt, & ways to ask the groom's men too.

When & how to ask your bridal train

Ask once your date is set & you have a sense of the size of the wedding, so your friends can plan. Six months or more ahead gives them time to save for outfits, travel & time off work.

Before you ask, decide:

  • How many bridesmaids you want, & whether there is a chief bridesmaid or maid of honour
  • What you will provide, such as makeup, gele or accessories, & what they will pay for
  • Which events they are expected at: introduction, traditional wedding, church, reception
  • Any duties, such as helping with aso-ebi, welcoming guests or carrying the bride's bag

Being clear upfront is kinder than a beautiful box followed by surprise costs. A friend may love you & still not be able to afford the commitment, so give her room to say no without guilt.

If you are planning a large bridal train, consider asking your closest friends first & in person, then the wider group together. It avoids anyone hearing the news second-hand.

Bridesmaid proposal ideas

The gift box

The classic. Fill a box with a few useful & pretty things, & tuck in a card with the question. It works whether you hand it over in person or send it.

A brunch or dinner

Invite your chosen friends together & ask them in person. It is a lovely way for the bridal train to meet if they do not already know each other.

A video call for friends abroad

If some of your bridal train live in the UK, the US or elsewhere, send a small box timed to arrive before a video call, & open it together.

A surprise delivery

Have a small box delivered to her home with a note asking her to call you. The phone call becomes the proposal, & you hear her reaction live.

A personalised item

A robe, a mug or a piece of jewellery with her initial & the words "Bridesmaid" or "Chief Bridesmaid" makes the question & the gift one & the same.

A simple handwritten letter

Sometimes words are enough. Tell her why you want her by your side, & what she has meant to you over the years.

What to put in a bridesmaid proposal box

Mix something useful, something sweet & something personal.

  • A personalised robe for getting ready together
  • A hand fan in your wedding colours
  • Lip gloss, a compact mirror or a small makeup bag
  • A scented candle or a small bottle of perfume
  • Chocolates or treats from a local baker
  • Jewellery or a hair accessory she can wear on the day
  • A card with your question & a short note about the plans

Think about her, not just the theme. A friend who never wears makeup will not miss the lip gloss, but she will love a book, a plant or her favourite snack.

If you would rather not put everything together yourself, our Gift Shop has a "Will you be my bridesmaid?" gift box, alongside personalised aso-ebi hand fans & other keepsakes for the bridal train.

Bridesmaid proposal card wording

Keep it short, warm & in your own voice. Some examples to adapt:

  • I can't say "I do" without you. Will you be my bridesmaid?
  • You've been there for every chapter. Will you stand with me for this one?
  • Life is better with you by my side, especially on [date]. Will you be my bridesmaid?
  • I need my best friend beside me on the biggest day of my life. Will you be my chief bridesmaid?
  • Aso-ebi, gele & a lot of dancing. Will you join my bridal train?
  • We've done school, heartbreak & everything in between. Will you be beside me for this?

Inside the card, add the date, the events & an honest line such as "Please tell me if this doesn't work for you. I'll understand, & I'll still want you there."

Asking the groom's men

Groomsmen deserve to be asked properly too. Many grooms keep it relaxed, but a small gesture still means a lot.

  • A night out or a dinner where the groom asks in person
  • A box with a personalised flask, cufflinks, a pocket square or a cap in the wedding colours
  • A card with a line such as "I'd be honoured to have you beside me on [date]. Will you be my groomsman?"
  • For the best man, something lasting: an engraved keepsake, a good watch or a book he will treasure

As with the bride's side, be clear about costs, outfits & which events they need to attend.

If your wedding party is mixed, such as a male best friend on the bride's side or a female friend on the groom's, adapt the wording & the box to suit. The point is the same: you want them by your side.

Keep the bridal train organised after the yes

Once everyone has said yes, create one group chat & keep one place for the details: dates, outfits, fittings, makeup times & the order of events. A wedding website helps here too, & our registry, bridal train & vendors page lets you introduce your bridal train to guests.

  • Share fitting & makeup schedules early.
  • Agree who pays for what in writing, even if that is in the group chat.
  • Give each person one clear job on the day.
  • Thank them properly afterwards, with a note & a gift.

Make the first get-together fun, such as a brunch, a fitting day or a games night, so everyone knows each other before the wedding week.

For outfits, our post on aso-ebi planning covers colours, orders & payments, which matter for the bridal train as much as for guests. For when to do what, see our wedding planning timeline.

Questions people ask

When should I ask my bridesmaids?

Ask once your date & the shape of the wedding are settled, ideally six months or more before, so your friends can plan for outfits, travel & time off. Friends abroad may need even longer. Give everyone the details they need to make an honest decision.

What should go in a bridesmaid proposal box?

A mix of useful, sweet & personal items works well: a robe or hand fan in your colours, a small beauty item, treats, a piece of jewellery & a card with your question. Keep it in proportion, as the box is a lovely gesture rather than the main thank-you gift.

Who pays for bridesmaids’ outfits at a Nigerian wedding?

It varies. Some brides cover fabric, makeup or gele, while bridesmaids pay for sewing, shoes or travel, & others agree on a different split altogether. There is no fixed rule, so be clear about what you will provide before anyone says yes.

Do groomsmen get proposal gifts too?

They can. Many grooms ask in person over a meal, sometimes with a small gift such as cufflinks, a flask or a pocket square in the wedding colours. As with bridesmaids, being clear about outfits, costs & events matters more than the gift itself.
